Martha R. Shannon, a longtime resident of Union Township, passed away peacefully Monday evening, April 29, 2019, at Jameson Care Center. She was 102.
Mrs. Shannon was born April 14, 1917, in Hickory Township (Lawrence County), a daughter of the late John and Ida (Shaffer) Robinson.
She attended Moffat School and later graduated from Eastbrook School in 1935.
Primarily a homemaker, Martha dedicated her life to raising her 10 children and caring for their home. Later in life, she worked as an Avon sales representative and also served as a rural mail carrier with the United States Postal Service for many years.
Martha was a member of First Presbyterian Church of New Castle, where she formerly served as a deacon and sang in the choir. She was also active at the First Presbyterian Recreation Center and planned many bus tours for its members.
Martha was the last surviving founding member of the Union Township Fire Department's Women's Auxiliary; and was an active Grange member for 80 years, both locally and at the state level. She enjoyed playing 500, birdwatching, gardening and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Her husband of 74 years, Paul E. Shannon, whom she married Nov. 23, 1939, passed away Aug. 14, 2014.
Surviving are three daughters, Alice Kellogg of Westbrook, Maine, Sally (Robert) Boyer of Lake Wales, Florida, and Barbara Shannon of Erie; seven sons, James (Hazel) Shannon of New Castle, John (Rosemary) Shannon of Girard, Ohio, Walter (Holly) Shannon of Ocean Isle, North Carolina, Dale (Patricia) Shannon of Uniontown, Ohio; Leslie (Deborah) Shannon and Calvin Sharon, all of New Castle, and Robert Shannon of Lewistown, Pennsylvania; a sister, Nancy Shively of New Wilmington; a brother, Ralph Robinson of New Castle; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, Martha was preceded in death by a sister, Violet Alborn; and three brothers, James, Clar and Allan Robinson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Martha's name to a charity of the donor's choice.
Calling hours will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, 125 N. Jefferson St., New Castle, with Pastor Richard Vogeley officiating.
Interment will follow in Graceland Cemetery, Neshannock Township.
