Obituary

Marko Joanow of Hermitage passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 16, 2017, in UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell, after an extended illness.  He was 89.

Mr. Joanow was born May 26, 1928, in Farrell, a son of Alex and Olga (Nickola) Joanow.  He was a 1946 graduate of Farrell High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  Marko was employed as a draftsman in the renewal parts office at the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp. for nearly 40 years, until its closing in 1986.  He then worked as a draftsman for Lehigh Design in Sharpsville; Commercial Shearing, Youngstown; and Anderson Brown Bavaria (ABB), Pittsburgh.  He married the former Fanny Glinatsis on June 2, 1957 in St. John's Greek Orthodox Church, Youngstown.  Marko was a member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Farrell.  He was also a former member of the Greek American Progressive Association (GAPA) and a founding member of the Order of AHEPA.  A Free and Accepted Mason, Marko was a member of the Kedron Lodge #389, West Middlesex.  He was an accomplished musician and played the mandolin, banjo, drums and the bouzouki.  Marko's greatest joy was his grandchildren.  He loved attending all of their scholastic and athletic events and watching the Hickory Hornet Marching Band with Sophia, Tony and Nickolas performing.

Surviving is his wife of 60 years, Fanny Joanow, at the residence; three sons, Dr. Alex M. (Marie) Joanow, Warwick, NY; Atty. Michael (Laurie)Joanow, Hermitage; and Anthony (Stacy) Joanow, Naples, FL; and nine grandchildren whom he adored, Alexa, Mark, Demetrious, Anthony, Sophia, Nickolas, Angelique, Michael and Elena.  He also leaves two sisters-in-law, Eva Joanow, Dublin, OH; and Sylvia Joanow, Tarpon Springs, FL; and several nieces and nephews.

Marko was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, John Joanou and Manuel Joanow.

A special thank you to Dr. Charles D'Auria, Dr. Michael Millen, Dr. Peter Daloni, Dr. Christopher Esper, UPMC Wound Care, UPMC Farrell and Hospitality Care Center for all of their love and care for Marko.  Also, to McGonigle Ambulance Service who were there whenever needed and with smiles on their faces.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 1007 Washington St., Farrell, PA 16121.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 p.m.
Thursday, September 21, 2017 , in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon .  Trisagion service will be at 7:45 p.m. Thursday , in the funeral home, followed by a Masonic service by the Kedron Lodge #389, West Middlesex.

Funeral service will be
10 a.m. Friday, September 22, 2017, in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Farrell, with Father Polykarp, officiating.

Interment: America's Cemetery, Hermitage, with military honor
