Mark Joseph Foley, D.O., 801 Koonce Rd., Hermitage, passed away at 10:30 a.m. Sunday (6-14-09) in his residence. He was 80.
Dr. Foley was born May 22, 1929 in New Castle, PA a son of the late Francis J. and Rose Elizabeth Martin Foley.
He was a 1947 graduate of New Castle High School and received his A.B. degree in chemistry in 1950 from Washington (PA) and Jefferson College where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
Dr. Foley served with the US Army Medical Corp. during the Korean and was honorably discharged in 1952.
He then worked for two years at the former Youngstown Sheet and Tube as a water chemist. Dr. Foley graduated in 1958 from the Still College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moine, Iowa.
He served his internship at Grandview Hospital, Dayton, Ohio from 1958-1959 and was a house physician at what was then the Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital (SVOH), Farrell, from 1960-1961. He had a private practice in West Middlesex from 1961-1963. Dr. Foley entered an anesthesia residency in 1963 at Detroit (MI) Osteopathic Hospital and was a staff anesthesiologist there from 1965-1966. He returned to the Shenango Valley in 1966 where he was a staff anesthesiologist at Shenango Valley Osteopathic Hospital until his retirement in 1992. During his tenure at SVOH he served as chief of the department of anesthesia and Chief of Staff. Dr. Foley also served on the hospitals board of director's for many years and aided in its merger with the former Greenville Hospital.
He was a member of the Shenango Valley Medical Center's Board of Trustees from 1988-1995 and was Chairman of the Board from 1992-1995.
Dr. Foley will be remembered as a loving husband and father; a kind and compassionate physician; and a friend to all who knew him. He was a tireless advocate for doing what was right, whether personally or professionally. Dr. Foley was a member of the Church of Notre Dame and the former Sharon Country Club.
His wife, the former Margaret Cunningham Hood, whom he married June 8, 1964, passed away February 15, 2000.
Surviving are: a son, Dr. Clifton R. Hood, IV and his wife Michelle Parsons, Galena, Ohio; three grandchildren, Clifton R. Hood, V; Diane Hood; and Jonathan Hood, all Bryn Mawr, PA; a sister, Dorothy Scott, New Castle, PA; and a niece, Rosemary Scott Studer, Fox Chapel, PA.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests material contributions be made to the Mark and Peggy Foley Memorial Garden, c/o The Chautauqua Institution, Chautauqua, New York 14722. Dr. Foley and his wife spent their summers at Chautauqua where they both loved the serenity.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday (6-17-09) in the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, with the Rev. Jeffrey Noble, pastor, as celebrant.
Family will receive friends in the vestibule of the church immediately following the Mass.
