Marilyn K. 'Kay' Bergkessel, 672 S. Oakland Ave., Sharon, passed away peacefully of natural causes at 2:05 p.m. Tuesday (8-31-10) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following an extended illness. She was 68.
Mrs. Bergkessel was born December 11, 1941 in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado the eldest daughter of Lawrence and Esther Mulberg Harwig.
She was a graduate of Cheyenne Wells High School and received her RN degree from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Denver, Colorado.
Kay served as a 1st Lieutenant with the US Air Force from 1963-1965 and was stationed at Loring (Maine) Air Force Base.
She moved to Sharon in 1965 where she and her husband raised their family. Kay retired in 1992 from Hospitality Care Center, Hermitage. She was previously a private duty nurse and also worked at various nursing homes, including Washington Square in Warren, Ohio where she was the Director of Nursing. Kay was a homemaker and a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka-Holy Trinity Church, Sharon. She was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing, ceramics and gardening. Kay will be remembered as a wonderful mother who was supportive, determined in her ways and always willing to make time for her family, regardless of her own needs.
Surviving are: her husband, Ronald J. Bergkessel, whom she married November 22, 1964; four daughters, Cynthia A. Heim and her husband Matthew, Pymatuning Township; Constance 'Connie' Bergkessel, Sharpsville; Cheryl L. Yeager and her husband Robert, Sharon; and Christine R. Wilcox and her husband Charles R., Jr., also Sharpsville; five grandchildren, Shawn and Kendra Heim; Lauren Wilcox; and Logan and Kyleigh Yeager; and her father, Lawrence Harwig; and five sisters, Barbara Silliman, Mary Jane Miller, Geraldine Harwig and Debbie Shank, all Colorado; and Karolyn Bertling, Maryland.
Kay was preceded in death by her mother.
Calling hours will be from 1-3 and 7-9 p.m. Friday (9-3-10) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Stanislaus Kostka-Holy Trinity Church, Sharon, with the Rev. Stanley Swacha, pastor, as celebrant.
Interment: Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
