Madelina "Mela" F. Garofalo of Sharpsville passed away peacefully at
11:20 a.m.
Monday, August 22, 2016, in her home, surrounded by her loved ones.
She was 66.
Mela was born December 15, 1949, in Sharon, a daughter of Salvatore "Sam" and Carolina DiPaolo Pompa.
She was a lifelong resident of Sharpsville and a 1967 graduate of Sharpsville High School where she was a member of the Blue Darling basketball team.
Mela earned her bachelor's degree in Business Administration from what was then Clarion (PA) State College in 1971 and was the first female to graduate from its Business School of Accounting.
Following her graduation she was employed as a controller for the former Hartzel Rose and Son in Youngstown, Ohio.
Mela began an accounting business in 1977 while working for her family business, Pompa's Styling Salon in Sharpsville.
She was a tax preparer for nearly 40 years and owned and operated Mela's Tax and Accounting Service, Sharpsville.
Her company was awarded the "Best of the Best"
by the readers of The Herald for several years.
Mela was an active member of St. Bartholomew Church, Sharpsville, where she was a member of its board, a volunteer at its annual fish fry and served as a Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) instructor.
She was proud of her Italian heritage and also helped with the churches Italian dinner fundraiser.
Mela lived on Madeline St. in Sharpsville most of her life (which was named after her)and loved calling Sharpsville her home.
She was an active member of Quota Club of Sharon and the Sharpsville Historical Society.
She was a member of the former Kennedy Christian Booster Club and, most recently, involved with the schools Foreign Exchange Student Program.
Mela enjoyed hosting and catering parties for family and friends and had an open house on New Year's Day in her home for more than 40 years.
Her two favorite hobbies were talking on the phone and gift giving.
She is survived by her former husband, Alfonso Garofalo, Rome, Italy.
Mela was a proud mother of two sons and four grandchildren: Michael A. Garofalo and his wife Jennifer A. Erdos, M.D., Pittsburgh, and their daughters, Gia, Mila and Lena; and Carlo A. Garofalo and his son Samuele, Sharpsville.
She also leaves a sister, Lucia "Luci" Pompa, Sharpsville; a nephew, Brian Foltz and his wife Cindy Pacillo, D.C., Sharpsville, and their son Kenny; and a niece, Frances "Frannie" Foltz, Cleveland, Ohio.
Mela was preceded in death by her parents.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Caroline DiPaolo Pompa Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Kennedy Catholic Family of Schools, 2120 Shenango Valley Freeway, Hermitage, PA 16148.
