Obituary

Mabel Jeannette Brewer, The Villas at St. Pauls, Greenville, formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully at the Villas at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday (5-4-11). She was 93.

Mabel was born August 29, 1917, in Struthers, Ohio, the daughter of George and Nellie Walker Creed.

She was a 1932 graduate of Youngstown East High School, Youngstown, Ohio. In 1934 she graduated from Kent State University with an A.S. in Education. After raising her children, Mabel enrolled at Youngstown State University and graduated in 1959 with a B.S. in Education. She retired in 1979 from West Hill Elementary School in Sharon where she was a teacher for 18 years. Previously she had taught for six years at Hartford Elementary in Hartford, Ohio.

She was a life-long member of the First Baptist Church in Sharon.

Mabel had a variety of interests and an adventuresome spirit, harkening back to 1934 when, at age 17, she and her brother, Fred, hitchhiked to the World's Fair in Chicago. She was an accomplished bridge player. For many years she played at the F.H. Buhl Club in Sharon and also at Whispering Oaks and the Senior Center in Hermitage. In addition to playing bridge, she also enjoyed playing golf with her children and grandchildren. After her retirement Mabel spent time traveling, often visiting family members who lived out-of-state or joining a group of friends for an Anderson Bus Tour. One of her favorite vacations was a trip to Alaska.

Sporting events were a big part of Mabel's life as well. She was an active, involved mother for both Little League and Babe Ruth League baseball during the 1950s and 1960s with all four of her sons playing, umpiring and managing. She attended the Sharon High Tiger football games in 1956 and again from1960 to1964 when three of her four sons (Fred, Bill, Tom) were on the team. Mabel then became a Gettysburg College Bullet fan when her two youngest sons, Bill and Tom, played there in the mid-to-late 1960s. Her favorite season was 1966 when Bill and Tom both started as linebackers for the 7-2 Lambert Cup winners.

Her husband, Joseph Cross Brewer, whom she married September 26, 1936, passed away on January 27, 1973.

She is survived by three sons, Alfred "Fred" N. Brewer and his wife Joellen, Hermitage; William C. Brewer and his wife Bonnie, Oklahoma City, OK; and Thomas G. Brewer and his wife Kathleen, Edmond, OK; eight grandchildren, Nancy Elmore, Wendy Martin, and Christopher, Joe, Fred , John, Bart and Laura Brewer; thirteen great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Creed.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Dorothy Jeannette Brewer; a son, Joseph C. Brewer; two brothers, Fred and Gilbert Creed; a half-sister, Margaret Secrist; and two granddaughters, Bridget and Cynthia Brewer.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Buhl Farm Park, 715 Hazen Road, Hermitage, PA 16148.
