Obituary

Funeral will be Saturday for Louis B. Dunch of Sharon, who passed away at 8:16 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, in UPMC Horizon, Greenville. He was 93. Mr. Dunch was born Dec. 18, 1921, in Sharon to Nicholas and Rose (Gruber) Dunch, the sixth of eight children. He was raised in the Roman Catholic faith and was a lifelong area resident. He was a 1941 graduate of Sharon High School and volunteered to serve his country during World War II as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne with the 502nd Infantry. For his service, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts. After the war, he met and married his wife, the former Mary Ann Feedler. They were together 61 years, enjoying 56 years of marriage before her passing on Aug. 4, 2013. Together they raised five children, John Dunch and his wife, Kathryn, Hubbard; Louis Dunch, Sharon; Karen McLusky, and Jeff Dunch and his wife, Kim, all Oxnard, Calif.; and Mary Jane Richartz and her husband, Scott, Fountain Valley, Calif. He also leaves: 10 grandchildren, Jonathan, Joshua and Rachael Dunch; Leah, Joshua and Hannah McLusky; Jeff Dunch; Zachary and Haley Richartz; and Jamie Dunch; a sister, Agnes Gilliland, and a brother, S. Frank Dunch, both Hermitage; along with many nieces and nephews who will miss Uncle Lou's good humor and presence at family gatherings, playing bocce and horseshoes, or telling stories. He was an active member of the former Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Farrell. Louis had a long and interesting career in various capacities working with people. He worked as a TV and radio repairman before securing a job as a postman for 34 years, retiring in 1984. He then worked part time as a school crossing guard at Stambaugh Avenue and East State Street in Sharon for 22 years, retiring for good in 2006. He loved working as a crossing guard, because he always said that the kids kept him young at heart. He also believed that always staying busy in life kept the body active and the mind sharp. For fun, Louis and his wife loved to go to polka nights and local community festivals to listen to the music and dance. He was always willing to help friends and family in need, at whatever jobs he could do in his spare time. He was a member of American Legion Post 299, Sharon, and Hickory Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6166, Hermitage. He also enjoyed playing cards, especially 500 rummy and euchre, and belonged to several social clubs and organizations throughout the years. While he never hit a big jackpot, he would drive to various stores such as Mr. D's and Penn Ohio drug store to try and pick a lottery winner, with a smile on his face. Besides his parents and wife, Louis was preceded in death by: two sisters, Rose Gerdy and Kay Shuttleworth; three brothers, Benjamin, John and Nicholas Dunch; and three infant grandchildren. Calling hours: 6 to 9 p.m. Friday (2-20-15) in J. BRADLEY McGONIGLE FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon. Service: 1 p.m. Saturday (2-21- 15) in the funeral home, with the Rev. Thomas Whitman, pastor of St. Joseph Church, Sharon, officiating. Interment: Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Cemetery, Hermitage, with military honors.
