Obituary

Lois M. Tamplin, a lifelong resident of Sharon, died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday evening, April 19, 2018, in Sharon Regional Medical Center of congestive heart failure. She was 84.

Ms. Tamplin was born on August 17, 1933, to Harry Evans and Frances (Groscost) Tamplin. A 1951 graduate of Sharon High School, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Youngstown State University in 1972.

From 1953 to 1992, Lois was employed as a secretary at the former Republic Steel Corporation in Youngstown and Warren. Following retirement, she served as Executive Secretary of Christian Associates of the Shenango Valley, and Parish Secretary at the former Grace Lutheran Church, Farrell; Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Hermitage; and most recently Clark Trinity United Methodist Church.

A member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Sharon, Lois served on the Altar Guild and Vestry, and was a member of the Senior Choir for more than 50 years. She initiated a needlepoint project at the church and stitched several kneeler cushions. She was also an Associate of the Anglican Society of Our Lady of Walsingham in England.

She was a member of the Episcopal Church Women's Board of Directors for the Diocese of Northwestern Pennsylvania, serving as president from 1987 to 1993. Lois had been a member of the Diocesan Council and Standing Committee, and Deputy to the Episcopal Church's General Convention. In 2015 she was awarded the Bishop's Cross by Bishop Sean Rowe for outstanding service to the Diocese.

During her college years, Lois studied voice, piano and organ at the Dana School of Music at YSU and was a member of the Alpha Nu Chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota International music fraternity. After graduation she was affiliated with the fraternity's Warren-Youngstown Alumni Chapter as its president and also as Sigma Province president.

An active member and former president of the Sharon Music Club, she also served as Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs president and was the state federation's representative on the National Federation of Music Clubs Board of Directors. For fifteen years she served as representative to the Chautauqua Institute Summer Music Festival for which she received a commendation in 2017.

Lois was a member of the College Club of Sharon and sang with the Shenango Valley Chorale.

She was proud of her Welsh heritage and enjoyed performing in traditional Welsh costume. Lois was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Women's Welsh Clubs of America and president of WWCA's Cambria Club in Niles. She was also a member of the Niles Gymanfa Ganu Association and a Trustee of St. David's Society of Youngstown.

She is survived by her brother, Dr. John C. Tamplin, Hermitage.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents.

Calling hours will be 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday ( 4-22-18 ) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon .

Requiem Mass will be 11 a.m. Monday ( 4-23-18 ) in St. John's Episcopal Church, with Rev. Dr. Adam T. Trambley, rector, as celebrant. Everyone is asked to please go directly to the church.

Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Hermitage.
