Leona A. Smith, 92, of Union Twp., passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, July 9, 2025, in UPMC Jameson Hospital, New Castle.

Mrs. Smith was born November 7, 1932, in New Castle, a daughter of the late Joseph A. and Alice (Woods) Carrigan. After attending St. Mary's Parochial Grade School, she graduated from New Castle High School in 1950.

A dedicated homemaker, Leona also owned and operated Smith's Drive-In alongside her husband, Grant, which was located on Route 422 in New Castle.

Leona was a devout member of Holy Spirit Parish – St. Mary's Church, in New Castle.

A kind and selfless woman, she devoted her life to caring for many family members with unwavering compassion, all while nurturing a deep love for animals and pets that brought her great joy.

Her loving husband of 67 years, Grant C. Smith, whom she married October 27, 1951, preceded her in death April 9, 2019.

Leona is survived by four children, Kathleen Kwolek (Gary), Patricia Caughey (Mark), Grant Smith, III (Nancy), and Joan Smith, all of New Castle; seven grandchildren, Mark (Dena), Joshua, and Shawn Caughey, Jessalyn Wheatley (Craig), Benjamin Smith (Erika), Christopher Kwolek (Britney), and Hunter Rozzi; and five beloved great-grandchildren, Bradshaw and Brynley Wheatley, Gwendolyn and Callista Smith, and Kamila Kwolek.

In addition to her parents and husband, Leona was preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Alice Jamison, Helen "Nellie" Brown, and Rita Carrigan; and five brothers, Tom, Ambrose, Charlie, and Joe Carrigan, and her twin, Leo Carrigan.

Calling hours will be 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday (7-12-25) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday (7-14-25) in Holy Spirit Parish – St. Mary's Church, 124 N. Beaver St., New Castle, with Rev. Aaron Kriss, as celebrant.

Interment will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Union Twp.
