Laura Smaltz of Hermitage, passed away at 10:30 a.m. Monday (2-4-13) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System. She was 87. Mrs. Smaltz was born March 29, 1925, in Farrell, a daughter of Ignac and Maryanna Korab Stanek. She was raised in Farrell and was a member of Farrell High School's graduating class of 1943. In her early years, she worked as a clerk for the former Sharon Steel Corp.'s Farrell plant and retired in 1963 with 19 years of service. She was later employed for many years by Kaufmann's Department Store, Hermitage, as a clerk in the women's department. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Sharon, where she belonged to the Woman's Guild and the Widow's Group. Laura was proud of her Polish heritage, enjoyed making pierogies at St. Adalbert's Church, Farrell, and dancing to polka music with her sisters. She also enjoyed bowling at Thornton Hall Lanes, Sharon; Sunset Lanes, Farrell; and 10 Pin Alley, Hermitage. She belonged to both the Polish National Alliance League and the Thornton Hall Seniors League. Laura found great joy working outside around her house. Laura's family always came first; she found her greatest joy when she was surrounded by her grandchildren. She will be sadly missed. Her husband, Rudolph "Rudy" P. Smaltz , whom she married Dec. 10, 1960, passed away April 14, 2008. She is survived by: a son, Richard Smaltz and his wife Linda, Hermitage; a sister, Helen Borawski, Farrell; two brothers, Alex and Henry Stanek, both Hermitage; two grandchildren, Christa and John Smaltz; two sisters-in-law, Alexandra "Sandy" Stanek, Farrell; and Margaret Bertolosio, Warren, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; her by two brothers, Theodore "Ted" Stanek and Edward Stanek; and two sisters, Wanda Robinson and Cecelia Janusko. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Sharon Regional Health System Hospice and Palliative Care, 2320 Highland Road, Hermitage, PA 16148. Calling hours: In keeping with her wishes, there will be no calling hours. Service: Private memorial service will be held by her family at a later date in St. Joseph's Church, Sharon, with the Rev.
