Obituary

Rev. Larry Haynes, Twelve Oaks Drive, Hermitage, passed away unexpectedly, Thursday (7-23-15), at his residence. He was 51. Lawrence Elbert Haynes was born on Dec. 28, 1963, in New Bedford, Mass., a son of CPO Elbert L. Haynes and Charlotte Nancy Diggle Haynes. He was raised in New Bedford and graduated from the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School. While at the vocational school, he became certified as a steam engineer and he maintained his certification throughout the years. He later studied at Zion Bible Institute, Barrington, R.I. and become an ordained minister. Spanning four decades, he has served as a minister in the Shenango Valley. He was the former pastor of the First Assembly of God Church, Hermitage, where he was instrumental in the initial construction and development of their North Keel Ridge worship site. After his assignment at the First Assembly of God, he sought out key people in the community and with his vision and their help, he created and fostered the very successful and popular Grace Community Church where he was the senior pastor. Larry was executive director of the Community Foundation of Western Pennsylvania and Eastern Ohio in Sharon. The exponential growth of the community fund during his 18-year tenure is a testimony to his hard work and love for the entire community. He served on several nonprofit boards and helped with many community projects and economic development initiatives. In 2002, he was honored by the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce and was named Volunteer of the Year. In 2010, he was honored by the Boy Scouts of America and received their Distinguished Citizen Award. In 2012, he received the Person of the Year Award from the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce. Larry was a member of Avalon Country Club and he enjoyed a good round of golf with his friends. He was also a certified tennis professional with the United States Tennis Association and enjoyed coaching as well as giving lessons in years past. A loving son, father and best friend to his three children, he will be missed immensely by his entire family. He is survived by his mother, Charlotte Nancy Diggle Haynes, New Bedford; a daughter, Jenifer Lynne Haynes, Arlington, Va.; two sons, David Lawrence Haynes, St. Louis, and Ian Douglas Haynes, Pittsburgh; a stepdaughter, Kelly M. Catrona, Milwaukee; his former wife Lynne A. Beck, Hubbard, with whom he had his three children; and his latter wife, Linda Haynes, Sharpsville, with whom he step-parented Kelly Catrona.
