Kathryn 'Kay' D. McKnight Gross, 230 Haviland Mill Rd. Brookville, Maryland, formerly of Sharon, passed away peacefully at 1:15 A.M. Friday (6-19-09) in Montgomery General Hospital, Olney Maryland. She was 67.
Kathryn, or Kay as she preferred to be called, was born in Sharon on September 17, 1941 the daughter of Robert and Bertha Zimmer McKnight.
Kay graduated from Sharon High School in 1959 and in her senior year she was awarded the Dr. Merstein Self Reliance Award. While in high school, she enjoyed playing basketball and working at the popular 'Corner Market' on East State Street in Sharon. She attended College for one year before moving to Washington, DC where she began working as a clerk for the Federal Government. She ultimately rose to a position of grants manager where she oversaw millions of dollars in grants for the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Health and Human Services.
She was a long time member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon.
She married Ray Gross on May 20, 1989 and for twenty years they enjoyed each other and traveling to wonderful destinations including Germany, The Bahamas, New Orleans, and Maui. Recently, together they completed Kay's long time dream of taking the train 'The Canadian' from Toronto to Vancouver.
Her major interests were cooking and animals and she enjoyed collecting numerous cook books and taking a variety of cooking classes.
She is survived by her loving husband Ray at home.
Kay was preceded in death by her parents.
