Ledney
July 8, 1915 – July 7, 2016
Kathryn Ledney, an adored resident of Garden Way, Hermitage, and formerly of S. Pymatuning Twp., passed away peacefully at 9:25 a.m. Thursday , one day short of her 101st birthday in Garden Way where she resided for the past five years.
Mrs. Ledney was born, July 8, 1915, in Sharon, a daughter of Harry Gregory and Anna Hricik Verholek. She was a lifelong area resident and a 1933 graduate of Sharon High School.
Kathryn was a lifelong member of St. John's Orthodox Church, Hermitage.
She was a member of the S. Pymatuning Homemaker's Club and was socially active at the Senior Center and the Salvation Army.
Earlier in her life, when her daughter was involved with Brownies and Girl Scouts, Kathryn was a leader for several years and was also involved with the 4H Club. During this time she was also a nanny/babysitter for four daughters of her neighbors, both teachers in the Sharpsville School District, and worked as a janitress for the same school system for five years.
She enjoyed playing the harmonica, board games, crossword puzzles and card games and was a wonderful homemaker and an excellent baker.
Her husband, George Ledney, whom she married October 6, 1934, passed away March 15, 1995.
She is survived by a daughter, Diane Mei and her husband Ronald, Hopatcong, NJ; a son, Dr. G. David Ledney and his wife Anna, Gathersburg, MD; seven grandchildren, Matthew Kraynak; Andrew and David Mei; Justin and Jason Ledney; and Steffie and Chrissie Ledney; five great grandchildren, Rebecca and Rachel Kraynak; Thomas and Christian Mei; and Peyton Ledney; and a daughter-in-law, Cheryl Ledney, New Jersy.
Besides her husband, Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Dr. John G. Ledney; four sisters, Annie Verholek, Estella Komisin, Mary Schambura and Helen Penich; and three brothers, twins, Charles and Anthony "Nick" Verholek; and Michael Verholek.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to: The Salvation Army, 600 Fisher Hill, Sharon, PA 16146; St. John's Orthodox Church, 3180 Morefield Road, Hermitage, PA 16148; or the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018.
Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 10, 2016 , in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State Street, Sharon. A Panachida service will be conducted at 6:45 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
Services: Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 11, 2016 , in St. John's Orthodox Church, 3180 Morefield Road, Hermitage, with the Rev. David Mastroberte, pastor, officiating.
Interment: St. John's Cemetery, Hermitage.
