Julia E. Sweeney Gill, Hermitage, passed away peacefully at 11:50 p.m. Monday (2-9-15) in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System following an extended illness. She was 94. Julia was born Nov. 5, 1920, in Wheatland, a daughter of Dennis and Della McCollough Sweeney. Her husband, James R. Gill Sr. whom she married Feb. 5, 1944, in the former St. Elizabeth Church in Farrell, passed away Sept. 19, 2002. A lifelong area resident, she graduated from Farrell High School. Mrs. Gill was an active member of Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, and belonged to its former Ave Maria Women's Society and the Notre Dame bridge club. A loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, Julia loved to cook and her family always came first; she adored them all. She was a volunteer for many years at the Prince of Peace Center, Farrell, and was honored with the center's meritorious award in years past. She was active in the Farrell Lions Club Den 810, where she served as past president of the Lionesses. She was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Along with her family, she was a supporter of the National Brain Tumor Society and she enjoyed participated in its Race for Hope in Washington D.C. She leaves: her two sons, James R. Gill Jr. and his wife Carol, New Castle; and Timothy S. Gill, State College; a daughter, Marcia Baer and her husband Ted, Bernville, Pa.; a daughter- in-law, Bonnie M. Krist Gill, Webster, N.Y.; a sister, JoAnn Staul, Hermitage; a sister-inlaw, Jo Sweeney; her grandchildren, Shanon Gibson and her husband Michael, Kelly Gill, Nicole Baer, Tiffany Stuber and her husband Eric, Brandon Baer and his wife Eileen, Elizabeth Baer, Katie and Jamie Gill, January Shoaf and her husband Don, and Lynnly Wiley and her husband Joshua; and her great-grandchildren, Madison R. Shoaf, Douglas B. Gibson, Evangeline and Giselle Wiley, and Brynlee Stuber. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Dennis George Gill, who passed away in March of 2007; two sisters, Patricia DonDero and Rita M. Burger; and a brother, Thomas E. Sweeney.
