Josephine Mentrek, a former longtime resident of Hermitage, passed away peacefully at 6:05 a.m. Friday, October 28, 2016 in the Light of Hearts Villa, Bedford, OH. She was 90.
Mrs. Mentrek was born July 14, 1926, in Nutwood, OH, a daughter of John and Anna (Hildic) Horzich.
She was the Salutatorian of the 1944 graduating class from Farrell High School and then attended the Sharon General Hospital School of Nursing.
A homemaker, Josephine previously worked for Golden Dawn Foods, Inc., as an order fulfillment clerk at their distribution center. In her later years she also worked part time as a private housekeeper.
Her husband, Henry "Pooch" Mentrek, whom she married Sept. 26, 1953, passed away Oct. 22, 2013.
She was a member of St. Adalbert's Church, Farrell.
Josephine was a longtime member of the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge #126, Farrell, and also served as a Judge of Elections in Mercer Co. for many years. She volunteered for the Little League and school sports boosters clubs, both Hermitage.
An avid reader, she also enjoyed word search puzzles. Josephine always kept a meticulous home, both indoors and outside in her lawn and garden.
Surviving are: a daughter, Hilary A. Hanrahan, Atlantic Beach, FL; a son, Michael Mentrek and his wife Vicki, University Heights, OH; three sisters, Mary Stiftinger, Willow Grove, PA; Frances Sok and her husband Tom, Hermitage; and Elizabeth Lengyel and her husband Rob, Sharpsville; three grandchildren, Megan Bendson and her husband Brent, Woolich, ME; Christopher Mentrek, Cleveland Heights, OH; and Peter Mentrek and his wife Lindsay, Anderson, OH; a great grandson, Finn Edward Bendson; along with several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Josephine was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Rose Butchko; and a son-in-law, Michael Hanrahan.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Sister Helen Scasny Memorial Fund of Light of Hearts Villa, 283 Union St., Bedford, OH 44146.
Calling hours will be 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday (11-1-16) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.
Funeral Mass will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday (11-2-16) in St. Adalbert's Church, 1035 Fruit Ave., Farrell; with Rev. Joseph C. Campbell, pastor, as celebrant.
Interment: Holy Cross Cemetery, Hermitage.
