Joseph J. Wiesen of Sharon passed away at
5:25 a.m.
Sunday, March 12, 2017, in St. Paul's Villa's, West Salem Twp., where he was a resident for the past two months. He was 88.
Mr. Wiesen was born May 2, 1928, in Sharon, a son of Joseph J. and Helen Catherine (Greggs) Wiesen. He attended the former St. Joseph Parochial Grade School, Sharon; Sharon High School; and was a graduate of Farrell High School.
Joe served with the U.S. Army Air Force in the Pacific Theater during WW II and in Germany during the Korean War. He was a life member and Past Commander of American Legion, Post # 299; Past Commander of the Catholic War Veterans, Post 1446; and a member of the VFW, Post 1338, all Sharon. He also served as Commander of the Mercer County American Legion Chapter and in the Sharon Honor Guard. Joe retired as plant operator in 1989 from the former Shenango Valley Water Co., where he was employed for 42 years, and was president of Local # 285, Utility Workers Union. A devout Catholic, he was a member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon.
Sports were a big part of Joe's life. He was a standout athlete in his youth and played semi-professional football. He was also a boxer in the service. Joe was the manager of IUE baseball team in Patagonia Little League for ten years and coached the Sharon Panthers and Slovenian Colts midget football teams. He also enjoyed riding a motorcycle most of his life.
Surviving is his wife, he former M. Jean Brest, whom he married May 27, 1950; a daughter, Jeanne Hevener and her husband Samuel, Richfield, OH; two sons, Joseph T. Wiesen and his wife Cindy, Sharon; and James M. Wiesen and his wife Susan, Geneva, FL; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, William C. Wiesen and his wife Catherine, Sharon; a sister-in-law, Monica Wiesen, Hermitage; and several nieces and nephews.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, James Wiesen, who died in infancy, and Robert H. Wiesen; a sister, Helen Ruth Caszatt; and a brother-in-law, Thomas Caszatt.
