Obituary

Joseph K. McCarl, 73, of Brookfield, OH, passed away Thursday, January 28, 2021, in Sharon Regional Medical Center.

Mr. McCarl was born June 18, 1947, in Grove City, a son of the late William and M. Jane (Crawford) McCarl. He attended Grove City Schools and was a 1965 graduate of Sharon High School. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in business and accounting from Youngstown State University.

He honorably served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam Era.

Joe was employed for more than 30 years at Cortland Bank as an accountant and auditor. Following his retirement, he worked as a substitute teacher for Trumbull County Schools and Mercer Area School District.

Joe was a member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, Sharpsville.

He enjoyed collecting and selling federal duck stamps and decoys and often set up a booth at the Four Seasons Flea and Farm Market, Campbell, OH.

Joe was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan and looked forward to playing cards with his friends. Above all, he loved sweets, yard sales and spending time with his grandsons.

He is survived by his wife, the former Rosemary "Dolly" Bondarenko, whom he married December 30, 1967; two daughters, Lori Bortner and her husband Jeff, of Millersville, MD, and Jodi Phipps and her husband Allen, of Sharon, PA; three grandchildren, Gryphon Johnson, Carl "C.J." Phipps and Jack Bortner; a sister, Betsy Schmidt, of Mercer; a brother, William Jeff McCarl, of Columbus, OH; a sister-in-law, Blanche Cwyner, of Transfer; and many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Special Olympics of Mercer County, 3441 Sharon Rd., West Middlesex, PA 16159.

Calling hour will be 11 a.m. until the time of the service, Tuesday (02/02/2021) in St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 311 West Ridge Ave., Sharpsville. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.McGonigleFuneralHomeandCrematory.com

Mass of Christian burial will be noon, Tuesday, in the church, with Rev. Matthew Strickenberger, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment: America's Cemetery, Hermitage.
