IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joseph Jude
Evans
January 4, 1952 – July 9, 2024
Joseph Jude Evans--loving husband, father, son, and brother; man of deep faith and community involvement; business valuation expert; United States Army veteran; and high school and college basketball standout--died peacefully in his home on Tuesday, July 9, in the company of his beloved wife Terry and several siblings.
Joe's life was centered around his deep commitment to his family and faith, his community service as a board member and president of ProLife of Mercer County, and past president of the Sharon City School Board. A lifelong member of the St. Joseph's Church community, Joe leaves behind his dear wife of 31 years, Terry (Chandler); daughter, Catherine Calaway "Caly", Operations Manager of Doncasters Southern Tool, Oxford AL; son, Dr. Joseph John "Jack", a General Surgery Resident at St Luke's Hospital, Bethlehem, PA.
The son of John H. and Rita Evans, Joe grew up in a lively, loud household with his four brothers and sister, honing his athletic skills by shooting baskets for hours on the backyard patio and being schooled by his older brothers at wiffle ball, football, golf at DumDum, and swimming at Buhl Park.
Joe's professional career included leading the business valuation services at the HBK CPA firm, and his professional credentials include Certified Public Accountant and Certified Business Appraiser.
Joe graduated from St. Joseph's Parochial Elementary School, Sharon High School, and the SUNY at Buffalo with a degree in Economics.
Joe was an outstanding basketball player in high school and college. At Sharon High School, Joe was a 2-year starter, achieving All-State and All-Section 3 honors. Of Joe's many high-school accomplishments, the best-known was Joe making a last-second shot to defeat archrival Farrell, which marked the only loss in Farrell's 1968 state championship season and still haunts many Farrell fans to this day. Joe went on to play basketball at Division 1 SUNY Buffalo, where in back-to-back games he guarded eventual NBA legends Doug Collins and George Gervin. Joe was very proud to have been inducted into the Mercer County Hall of Fame in 2019.
Joe loved being with his wife, Terry, and two children at their summer cottage at Lake Erie and playing golf with a wide circle of friends at Avalon at Buhl. A profound reader and writer, Joe was a devout student of medieval and Renaissance history, military history, theology, and current affairs.
In a time of self-interest, Joe always put others first and lived a life built on generosity, integrity, civility, and service to others.
While we feel profound sadness at our loss, we'll be forever grateful for the good fortune of having Joe in our lives.
In addition to his wife and children, Joe leaves his five siblings; Harry (Karen), Frank (Linda), MaryRita Evans (Andy Hrenyo), Bob (Wendy) and Nick (Melissa); as well as a brother-in-law, David Chandler; several nieces; and many dozens of cousins and dear friends
