A private funeral service will be held for Joseph G. Donatelli, Foxwood Drive, formerly of Christy Road, both Hermitage, who passed away unexpectedly while battling a lengthy illness Tuesday morning (4-19-11) in UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell. He was 87.
A lifelong area resident, he was born February 22, 1924 in Farrell, Pa., the son of Angelo and Anna DeMartinis Donatelli.
Joseph attended Farrell Schools and was called to duty on June 23, 1943 by the United States Army at the age of 19. A decorated war veteran, he reached the rank of Sergeant and was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands in the South Pacific Theater of Operations. He was honorably discharged on February 16, 1946 with the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal, and ultimately the WWII Victory Medal.
Mr. Donatelli was employed at Sawhill Tubular Division Cyclops Corporation, Wheatland, and retired in 1990 with 40 years of service.
He is a member of Notre Dame Church, Hermitage. Joe loved to bowl and was a familiar face at Hickory Bowl for many years. He also enjoyed mentoring his children as a father and a coach and was active with the New Virginia Baseball program in the late 1960's and 1970's, he rarely missed a game. His passion was gardening and sharing his home grown vegetables each year. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5286, Farrell.
His wife the former Elizabeth 'Betty' Mae Cefrick whom he married on January 29, 1949, survives at home.
He is also survived by his daughter, Susan B. Donatelli and her companion Frank Lavore, Spencer, NY; three sons, Ronald J. Donatelli and his wife Karen, Hermitage, Richard J. Donatelli, Canfield, OH, and Mark A. Donatelli and his wife Mary, Howland, OH; four grandchildren, Todd and Timothy Donatelli, Maria and Marco Donatelli; four great grandchildren, Morgan, Dante, Evan, and Bria Donatelli; a sister Bridget Dillon, Sharon, and a brother Carmen Donatelli, Florida.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Frank B. Donatelli, and a sister Roseanne Dudash.
