Obituary

Joseph H. Bolotin, M.D., of Hermitage, died at home on Tuesday morning (8-12-14) at the age of 100. His wife of 76 years, the former Dorothy Messing, was with him, as were his three children, David Bolotin of Santa Fe, N.M., Ruth Schwartz of Charleston, S.C., and Susan Bolotin of New York City. Dr. Bolotin was born April 16, 1914, in Sharon to Russian émigrés Simon S. and Ida R. Bolotin. His family valued education highly. Joseph, the oldest of four children, graduated from Sharon High School with honors in 1930; from Adelbert College of Western Reserve University with a bachelor of arts, summa cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, in 1934; and from the School of Medicine, Western Reserve University, in 1938. A veteran of World War II, Dr. Bolotin entered the Medical Corps of the U.S. Army in 1942. He served as first lieutenant and then captain, both in the United States and on Saipan, until 1946. He returned to his hometown to practice medicine in 1948. The longtime chief of medical service for Sharon General Hospital, now Sharon Regional Health System, Joseph Bolotin, a specialist in internal medicine, practiced a type of medicine that is almost never seen these days. Office visits typically lasted an hour, his home phone number was public and he made house calls. He did this because he loved medicine, and found diagnosis and caregiving endlessly fascinating. He liked knowing his patients, and wanted them to feel as if they knew him. A member and secretary of Sharon Regional Health System's board of directors and its executive committee, a member of the hospital's Quality Review Committee, and chairman of the Bioethics Committee from its inception until 2010, Dr. Bolotin was a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Other interests included bridge (about which he was very serious), travel (he relished seeing new things), the Rotary (he loved reading to the third-graders at Musser Elementary School, Sharon), his community (he was past president of the Mercer County Heart Association and Cancer Society), his synagogue (he was past chairman of the executive committee of the Shenango Valley Jewish Federation) and, most of all, his family. His marriage was not only long but incredibly close. He lived near his siblings and many of his nieces and nephews for much of his life. He took enormous pride in his children, in their spouses, in his grandchildren and, recently, his first great-grandchild. In addition to his wife and children, Joseph Bolotin is survived by: his daughter-in law, Georgia Knight; his sons-in-law, Bill Schwartz and John Rothman; his grandchildren, Stephanie Schwartz, Rebecca and Joshua Weinreich, Lily Rothman and Noah Rothman; his great-grandson, Raphael Weinreich; his brother and sister-in-law, Leon and Harriett Bolotin; and many cousins, nieces and nephews, who showed him great kindness and love throughout his life but particularly in his later years. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister and brother-in-law, Rose and Abe Rudberg; a brother and sister- in-law, Nathan and Ruth D. Bolotin; and his sister-inlaw and brother-in-law, Helen and Louis Schwartz. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests that anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution in his memory to please consider one of the following: Youngstown Area Jewish Federation, 505 Gypsy Lane, Youngstown, OH 44504; Shenango Valley Community Library, 11 N. Muller of Congregation Rodef Shalom, Youngstown, officiating. Interment: Temple Beth Israel Cemetery, Hermitage.
