Joseph Robert "Bob" Apel, 84, of Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care in New Wilmington passed away Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at his residence. Bob was born Oct. 13, 1928, in Pittsburgh to the late John William Apel Sr. and Grace Millheizler Apel. After graduating in 1947 from Central Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, Bob continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating with a degree in economics in 1954. In 1974, he graduated from Youngstown State University with a master's in education. He served in the Army in Korea from 1951 to 1953 as an ammunition corporal with Heavy Mortar Company 32nd Regiment of the 7th Infantry Division. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, United Nations Medal and Korean Service Medal W2BSS. Bob is survived by his wife, Constance (Caye) Apel, whom he married Nov. 22, 1956, at Epiphany Church in Pittsburgh. He was employed from 1959 to 1987 as a sixth-grade teacher in the East Liverpool (Ohio) School District and taught math, science and art at the Glenmoor and LaCroft elementary schools. Bob was a member of St. Ann Church and St. Aloysius Church in East Liverpool and later affiliated with Mary, Mother of Hope Parish in New Castle. He was a member of the alumni organizations of Central Catholic, Pitt, YSU and the 7th Infantry Division Association. In later years, he enjoyed doing the many activities and trips that were sponsored by the Shenango Presbyterian Senior Care with his wife and daughter. He especially enjoyed his private art lessons with Don Gold, "The Art Guy." He was a devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates and Penguins, and he enjoyed golfing. Besides his wife, Bob is survived by a daughter, Colleen (Bill) Wilver of New Castle, along with his grandson, Patrick Joseph Wilver, who serves in the Army and is a member of the West Point Class of 2013. Also surviving is his sister, Mary Grace Korneff of Pittsburgh. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Maureen Apel; and a brother, John William Apel Jr. The family has set up a memorial fund with Fisher House Foundation, an organization which serves the needs of families of wounded military personnel. A private blessing service will be held Monday morning, July 15, 2013, at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 W. Falls St. A committal service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh with military honors rendered. Entombment will follow.
