John George Wassil, III, M.D., passed from this temporal life on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, in the intensive care unit of Sharon Regional Medical Center.
He was 50.
Dr. Wassil was born April 29, 1968, in Albany, NY, a son of John G. Wassil, Jr. and Carol Anne (Hogan) Wassil. He was born on his father's 30 th birthday. The Wassil family moved to Sharon in June of 1976 and John attended the former Notre Dame Parochial Grade School, Hermitage. He was a 1986 graduate and a class valedictorian of Kennedy Catholic High School, Hermitage, where he was a basketball standout and a member of its first state basketball championship team.
John attended the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN, graduating cum laude in 1990 with a BS degree in science pre-professional. He then matriculated to the University of Pittsburgh Medical School, graduating in 1994. Dr. Wassil did his residency in Physiatry and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at UPMC where he became board certified.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Carol Anne Wassil.
Surviving are: two sons, Brennan Michael Wassil and Ethan Patrick Wassil; his wife, the former Diana Green, whom he married November 3, 2006; his father, John G. Wassil, Jr., M.D., of Hermitage; two brothers, James Thomas Wassil, of Philadelphia; and Michael Gregg Wassil and his wife Jessica, of Nineveh, Pa.; and a sister, Susan McDonald and her husband Colin, Mt. Lebanon section of Pittsburgh.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Carol H. Wassil Academic Scholarship Fund, c/o The Community Foundation of Western PA and Eastern OH, 7 West State St., Suite 301, Sharon, Pa. 16146.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, July 16, 2018, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.
Funeral Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, 2018, in the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, with Rev. Glenn R. Whitman, as celebrant.
