Obituary

COLUMBUS, Ohio - John "Jay" Troy, Somerset Avenue, Westerville, Ohio, formerly of Sharon, passed away at 11:36 a.m. Thursday (10-10-13) in Select Specialty Hospital, Columbus, after a brief illness. He was 79. Mr. Troy was born Sept. 3, 1934, in Sharon, one of five children born to John J. and Freda Katherine Schenker Troy. Jay was born and raised in Sharon and was a member of Sharon High School's graduating class of 1952. He matriculated to Youngstown State University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering. He worked as a safety and fire prevention engineer in Ohio, California, Guam, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey and Louisiana. He was an active member in the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers; a life member in the National Fire Protection Association; former president of the California Society of Professional Engineers; and a member of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers and the National Society of Professional Engineers. He had been president of the Highland Lakes Homeowners Association and was active in local politics. Jay was an active member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Westerville. He loved his family, his church, playing bridge, all things engineering, and anything pertaining to politics. A loving husband, father, brother and friend to many, he will be sadly missed by all. His wife, the former Joanne Witherow, whom he married Nov. 22, 1956, survives at home. He also leaves his two daughters, Susan Troy, at home; and Linda Burch and her husband Eddie, Grove City, Ohio; and two sisters, Julie Troy, Newtown, Conn.; and Bonnie Walsh, Placentia, Calif. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Thomas and Martin Troy. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Youngstown State University, School of Engineering, 1 University Plaza, Youngstown, OH 44555. Calling hours: Noon to time of service Monday (10-14-13) in J. BRADLEY McGONIGLE FUNERAL HOME and CREMATORY Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon. Service: Funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Donald E. Berdis, pastor of Our Lady of Fatima- St. Ann's Church, Farrell, officiating. A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, in St. Paul the Apostle Church, 313 N. State St., Westerville, OH 43082, with the Rev. David Gwinner presiding. Interment: With his parents in St. Elizabeth's Cemetery, Farrell.
