John L. Stabile, Sr., John XXIII Home Hermitage; formerly of Chesapeake Ct., Hermitage and Norris Ave., Farrell, passed away peacefully at 10:45 a.m. Saturday (1-8-11) in UPMC Horizon Hospital, Farrell. He was 89.
Mr. Stabile was born January 13, 1921 in Uniontown, PA a son of the late Louis and Mary Fier Stabile.
He was a 1940 graduate of Farrell High School where he was a standout quarterback for the Night Riders football team. In addition to football, he was also a member of the wrestling team.
John served with the US Army Air Corp. as a Staff Sgt. during WW II in Trinidad, West Indies.
He retired as a Millwright Foreman in 1981 from the former Sharon Steel Corporation where he was employed for more than 35 years.
John was an active member of St. Joseph Church, Sharon, where he was a member of its Holy Name Society and served as an usher for many years at the 5:15 p.m. Mass on Saturday evenings. A man of strong faith, he was a daily communicant and a devout catholic. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 684; the American Legion, Post 299; and the Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, Lodge 103, all Sharon; the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 5286; the New Deal Club, where he was a former officer; and the Italian Home, all Farrell; and a member and past treasurer of the Federation of Clubs. Years earlier, John coached the Farrell Midget football team; and was an umpire for Farrell Little League and the Shenango Valley Slow Pitch League. More recently he served as a volunteer at UPMC Horizon Hospital in Farrell. An honest and sincere man, he will be remembered by many for his ever present smile.
His wife, the former Mary Jordan, whom he married November 17, 1945 in St. Bartholomew Church, Sharpsville, passed away May 11, 1992.
Surviving are: a daughter, Rosanne Smithyman Kish and her husband Robert, Hermitage; a son, John 'Jack' L. Stabile, Jr. and his wife Michelle Garrett, Hermitage; a grandson, Thomas B. Smithyman, III and his wife Colleen, Pittsburgh; two great grandchildren, Aidan and Jordan Smithyman; a sister, Marie 'Babe' Lyden, Farrell; and several nieces and nephews and their families.
Besides his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Lisa M. Smithyman; a sister, Antonette Keller; three brothers, Daniel, James and Michael Stabile; and a son-in-law, Thomas B. Smithyman, Jr.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Joseph Church, 79 Case Ave., Sharon, PA 16146.
Calling hour will be from noon to 1 p.m. Monday (1-10-11) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.

Mass of Christian burial will be 1:30 p.m. Monday (1-10-11) in St. Joseph Church, Sharon, with the Rev. Glenn R. Whitman, pastor, as celebrant.
Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage, with military honor's rendered by the Farrell VFW, the West Middlesex VFW and the Wheatland American Legion Honor Guard.
