John Eugene Sorbo Sr., 81, of 149 McBride Acres, North Beaver Twp., passed away on Friday August 3, 2012 in Poland Twp., Ohio.
He was born on January 30, 1931 in New Castle to the late Andrew and Josephine Naples Sorbo.
John was a 1949 graduate of Shenango High School and later graduated from Lafayette College in Easton, PA with a degree in electrical engineering.
John married the former Betty Esposito on June 10, 1952 and she survives him at home.
He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from July 15, 1954 to June 27, 1956 as a communication specialist serving in Hawaii for over fifteen months.
John was employed at Youngstown Sheet & Tube as an electrician and at New Castle Foundry; he retired from Babcock & Wilcox in Koppel as a maintenance foreman. He most recently was working for 422 Sales.
Since 1994 John was a volunteer for MAPS Missions Abroad Placement Services, a group that would build and restore churches. He was also a volunteer and member of South Hills Athletic Association. He was an active member of High Pointe Church in Poland Twp., Ohio where he served on the church board. He was very dedicated to his faith and helping anyone who was in need. John enjoyed hunting with his son and grandson, camping and gardening.
Besides his wife Betty he is survived by two daughters, Colleen A. Kullen and son- in-law Bud of Beaver Falls and Marilyn L. Mangino and son- in-law Don of New Castle; one son, John E. Sorbo Jr. and daughter- in- law Lyn of Clarion, pa. Three sisters, Adelaide Strayer of Fl, Ellen Aiello(Mike) of New Castle and Edna Mihok of New Castle. Three brothers; Rev. Anthony Sorbo(Angie) of Soderton,PA, Andrew Sorbo(Marion) of New Castle and Joseph Sorbo(Donna) of New Castle. Nine grandchildren also survive him, Daniel, David, Vincent and Alannah Sorbo; Girard and Brady Kullen; Maranda, Mallory and Donnie Mangino.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was a sister, Joann Conrad and his Step-mother, Antinette Sorbo.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 8 to 9 a.m. at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 W. Falls St. New Castle.
A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday for High Pointe Church 5716 Struthers Rd. Poland Twp. where a funeral service will conducted at 10:00 a.m. by the Rev. Joe DeLapa and John's brother Rev. Anthony Sorbo.
Entombment will follow at Graceland Cemetery. Full military rites will be offered at the conclusion of the committal prayers.
