Obituary

Celebration of life Mass will be held Monday for John R. Schneider of Hermitage, formerly of Oakwood Drive, Brookfield. He passed away unexpectedly at 9:41 p.m. Wednesday (11-4-15) in the emergency room of Sharon Regional Health System. He was 83. Mr. Schneider was born Dec. 5, 1931, in Youngstown, one of three sons born to Rynold Daniel and Mary T. Meneghan Schneider. He graduated from Sharon High School in 1949. Following high school, John gained employment with the Sharon Herald and attended what is now Youngstown State University. A reservist with the Navy, he was called to active duty on Oct. 21, 1950. He served as a gunner's mate 3rd class aboard the USS Goldfinch, a minesweeper of the Navy assigned to the dangerous task of removing mines from the eastern seaboard of the United States. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home to his position in the composing room at what is now The Herald. John retired in 1994 as composing room foreman. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church, Sharon; and a former member of St. Bernadette's Church in Masury. He belonged to American Legion Post 299, Sharon; and Knights of Columbus Council 3984, Masury. He loved bowling and golfing and was a member of several leagues including The Herald golf league and Sharon Regional Hospital bowling league. His wife, the former Muncey Darko, whom he married June 6, 1959, survives at the residence. He also is survived by his children, two daughters, Kathleen Preskitt and her husband Ed, Fort Worth, Texas; and Laura Schneider, Pulaski; and his son, Kevin Schneider, South Pymatuning Township; a brother, William (Lorrie) Schneider, Park Ridge, Ill.; a sister-in-law, Barbara Schneider, Midlothian, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Schneider, in August of this year. In lieu of flowers, his family suggests memorial contributions be made in his memory to Wounded Warrior Project or National Breast Cancer Foundation. Service: Celebration of life Mass at 1 p.m. Monday (11-9-15) in St. Rose Cemetery Chapel, Hermitage, with the Rev. Thomas Whitman as celebrant. Cremation has taken place.
