John E. "Jack" Schmidt, of South Pymatuning Township, passed away at 2:20 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after an extended illness. He was 83. Mr. Schmidt was born Nov. 5, 1931, in Sharpsville, the youngest of three sons to George and Florence Ewalt Schmidt. He was a lifelong Sharpsville resident and a 1949 graduate of Sharpsville High School. Jack served with the Army for three years in the Intelligence division while stationed in Germany during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge, he returned home and was employed for six years at the former United National Gas, Sharon. Jack was an independent agent for State Farm Insurance for nearly 25 years and retired in 1983 in the top 10 percent of the most profitable agencies in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Jack was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Sharpsville. He was a Free and Accepted Mason and a member of Scottish Rite Cathedral, New Castle. He also was a member and past president of Sharpsville Service Club. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating on the Shenango Reservoir, his tractor and tending to his property and lawn, in which he took great pride. He and his wife, who was his office manager for more than 20 years, enjoyed traveling and spending the winter months in Florida. He was married to the former Elizabeth Ann Vendel on June 1, 1957, in St. Peter's Church, Conneautville, Pa. She died Jan. 8, 2014. Surviving are a daughter, Susan Schmidt, Sharpsville; a brother, George "Bud" Schmidt, New Castle; a sister-in law, Margaret Toner, Meadville; a brother in-law, John Vendel, Conneautville; and several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and -nephews; and great-great-nieces and -nephews. Besides his loving wife, Jack was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert Schmidt. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Salvation Army Corps, 660 Fisher Hill, Sharon, PA 16146; or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
