Obituary

John B. O'Connor,77, of South Point at Jameson South, passed away the morning of Sept. 28, 2012 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital surrounded by his loving family. John was born on February 21, 1935 in West Springfield, MA. to the late John B. and Lucy Nalwalk O'Connor. He was a 1953 graduate of Cathederal High School in Springfield,Ma and graduated from Western New England College in West Springfield,MA, with a B.S. degree in enginerring. He was first employed at Monsanto Corp. and then at Pratt Whitney Corp. in Massachusetts, he moved to New Castle with is family in 1972 after gaining employment with Universal Rundle Corp. where he retired from as the manager of reserch and developement in the fiberglass division. Following his retirement he continued to work as an independant consultant in his field for several other companies. John was a member of Mary, Mother of Hope Parish, St. Mary's Church since moving to New Castle and was an active volunteer at his parish for numerous activities including weekly bingo. He was a Life member of the Knights of Columbus New Castle Council 512, where he served as Grand Knight and was a member of the 4Th Degree of the Villa Maria Assembly, where he served as Faithful Navigator. John also served as a State District Deputy in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Third and Fourth Degree Teams and served as a Conferring Officer for the Fourth Degree. He enjoyed playing golf, bowling and was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan, being a season ticket holder for many years. Most of all John enjoyed being with his family and friends. John was married to his high school sweetheart, the former Patricia E. Scanlon on June 16, 1956 and she preceeded him in death on Sept. 10, 2005. He is survived by three daughters, Maureen O'Connor of New Wilmington, Kathleen (Marty) McGonigle of New Castle and Christine O'Connor of New Castle. Four sons, Timothy (Marie) O'Connor of Punxsutawney, Kevin (Amy) O'Connor of Sterling, VA, Terry (Kim) O'Connor of Gibsonton, FL and Patrick (Paula) O'Connor of New Castle. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, Sarah, Rebekah,Racheal and Danny O'Connor; Katie and Marty McGonigle; Hal and John Tucker and P.J. and Claire O'Connor. Besides his parents and wife he is preceeded in death by one brother William O'Connor and a sister Sr. Ruth O'Connor SSJ. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 W. Falls St. A procession will leave the funeral home on Monday at 9:30 a.m. for St. Mary's Church where a Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. by the Rev. Frank D. Almade, Pastor.
