Obituary

John W. Nugent, 79, of Sharon, formerly a longtime resident of Playa del Rey, CA, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday evening, April 6, 2025.

Mr. Nugent was born July 21, 1945, in Sharon, a son of the late John W. and Lillian E. (Rigby) Nugent. He graduated from Brookfield High School in 1963 and earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Youngstown State University.

An entrepreneur, John began his career in the manufacturing sector by designing and building car wash and water reclamation systems. The international success of his business inspired a relocation to Playa del Rey, CA, where he lived for 35 years.

Beginning in 1995, John assumed ownership and operation of Nugent Convalescent Home in Hermitage, which his parents had originally opened in 1958, located on Logan Avenue in Sharon.  He successfully expanded the business portfolio to include Clepper Manor CCRC in Sharon, Shelbourne CCRC in Butler, PA, and Lakeview CCRC in Beaver, PA. The successes of his nursing home operation culminated in the construction of The Lakes at Jefferson in Jefferson Twp., which included independent living and assisted living options.

John was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Sharon.

He was very active in Rotary International, and while living in California, served as the President of the Westchester Rotary Club and the District Governor of Rotary District 5280, Los Angeles, CA, from 1993-1994.

John enjoyed traveling, fishing, and spending time with his family.

His beloved wife of 58 years, Nancy (Nail) Nugent, whom he married on December 25, 1967, survives at home.

John is survived by two sons, Derric James Nugent, Brookfield, and Shane Elden Nugent (Diane), Mercer, PA; four grandchildren, Meagan Rachelle Nugent, Logan William Nugent, Garrett Ethan Nugent, and Brandon Anthony Nugent; three nephews; a niece; two great-nephews; and two great-nieces.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Nugent Woolf.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Sharon Historical Society, 290 E. State St., Sharon, PA 16146; or Buhl Park, 715 Hazen Road, Hermitage, PA 16148, online at: https://buhlpark.org/give-back/.
