Obituary

John H. Nichols, 5 Stoneridge Blvd., formerly a 57 year resident of Lyle Dr., both Hermitage, passed away peacefully in his sleep early Friday morning, August 5, 2016, in his home where he was tenderly cared for by his wife, children and family members after a period of failing health. He was 94.

Mr. Nichols was born June 12, 1922, in Sharon, a son of Genaro and Mary DeMatteo Notarnicola (Nichols).

He was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Sharon High School where he was a standout football player.

A decorated war veteran, John served with the US Army Air Corp. in the European Theater during WW II and was a member of the Hickory VFW, Post # 6166, Hermitage.

He retired as a welder in 1984 from the former Sharon Transformer Division of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation where he was employed for more than 40 years. He later worked as a courier/driver for ADESA in Mercer.

John was a charter member of the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, and its Special Activities Group (SAG).

A hard worker throughout his life, John was a master craftsman and designed and built his two family homes.

He was also an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing his yield with neighbors, family and friends.

John was a family man and enjoyed his grandchildren and attending their scholastic and athletic events.

He and his wife also enjoyed traveling, particularly to Las Vegas, and also to Italy where they celebrated their 50
th wedding anniversary.

John and his brother-in-law and best friend, the late Jack Mottmiller, were daily walkers in Buhl Park for many years. A quiet man, John had a very generous heart and was always willing to help others. He was much loved and will be missed dearly by his family. A loving husband, father and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 65 years, the former Grace H. Mottmiller, whom he married June 23, 1951, in St. Joseph Church, Lucinda, Pa.; four children, John Mark Nichols, Sharon; Mary Kay Pitts and her husband James, Hermitage; Lisa A. Klaric and her husband Michael, Jr., Hermitage; and Matthew P. Nichols and his wife Sandra, Cortland, Ohio; 10 grandchildren whom he adored, Mark Nichols; Adam and Bridget Pitts; Jonica (Klaric) Vournous and her husband Pete; Michael III, Emily and Roman Klaric; and Sabrina, Jac and Shelby Nichols; one great-grandson, Logan Nichols and another great grandchild on the way; a sister-in-law, Florence Nichols, Hermitage; and many loving nieces and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Joseph, Albert and Alfred Nichols; four sisters, Elizabeth Morsillo, Ida Caputo, Yolanda Orr and Tressa Miller; and a daughter-in-law, Brenda Nichols.

Calling hours will be from 11:30 a.m. until the time of Mass on Tuesday , August 9, 2016 , in the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage.

Funeral Mass will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, in the church, with Rev. Jeffery J. Noble, pastor, and Msgr. Edward J. Zeitler, senior pastor, as concelebrants.

Military honors will be rendered by the Hickory VFW, Post # 6166, Honor Guard immediately following the Mass.

Entombment: St. Rose Cemetery Mausoleum, Hermitage.
