John J. Nene, 82, of New Castle, passed away Friday, January 26, 2024, in UPMC Jameson Hospital.

Mr. Nene was born March 19, 1941, in New Castle, a son of the late Fred and Catherine (Hannon) Nene and graduated from New Castle High School in 1959.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, John proudly served from 1960 to 1964 and was stationed aboard the USS Randolph during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Following his honorable discharge, John worked for 34 years at Penn Power until retiring as a substation inspector in 2000. He delivered flowers at the former Weingartner's Florists during retirement.

John was of the Roman Catholic faith.

He married the former Sandra Warneck on December 7, 1968, and she preceded him in death on April 15, 2012.

John enjoyed walking the trail at Pearson Park and traveling, especially to visit his son in Minnesota.

He is survived by a son, John Nene and his wife Kayse; a sister, Helen Scoggin; and three brothers, Fred Nene and his wife Candace, Richard Nene, and David Nene and his wife Barb.

In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by two brothers-in-law, Donavon Schmidt and George Scoggin.

In keeping with John's wishes all services will be held privately.
