Obituary

John F. "Jack" Coyne, 92, of New Castle passed away peacefully of natural causes the evening of Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2015, at Clen- More Place with family at his side.

Jack was born on Dec. 7, 1923, one of five children born to John W. and Delia Agnes King Coyne. He was a lifelong city resident and graduated from New Castle High School. He studied at Youngstown College before enlisting in the Air Force.

A decorated veteran of World War II, he served as a staff sergeant and B-17 tail gunner with the 91st Bombardment Group, 1st Air Division, 8 Air Force, and was the last surviving member of his B-17 group. His tour of duty included missions aboard the infamous Wee Willie B-17. He was honorably discharged on Oct. 5, 1945, decorated with the following medals — European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal, 3 Bronze Battle Stars, Distinguished Flying Cross Medal, Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Good Conduct Medal. Mr. Coyne owned and operated the former Coyne Trucking Co. in Union Township from 1951 until his retirement in 1986.

He was a member of St. Camillus Parish. He enjoyed gardening, watching birds at the feeder and simply sitting by the wood stove passing time. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing in his earlier years, and was always proud of his Irish heritage.

His wife, the former Dorothy E. Onasch, whom he married on April 16, 1955, survives at home. He also leaves his two daughters, Mary Beth Coyne of Maynard, Mass., and Cathy A. Coyne and her husband, Thomas E. Murray, and a grandson, Liam F. Murray, all of Bethlehem. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Clara Coyne of New Castle; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three sisters, Mary Agnes McCormick, Katherine Roche and Clara Turk; and his brother, William Patrick Coyne.
