John L. Coon, 2190 Hubbard-Masury Rd., Hubbard, Ohio, passed away Friday morning, April 20, 2012, in his home, after an extended illness. He was 63.
Mr. Coon was born November 2, 1948 in Sharon a son of George L. and Julia H. Yourchisin Wood. After the death of his father, he was adopted by his step-father, Billy Coon.
John was a lifelong area resident and a 1968 graduate of Hickory High School, Hermitage.
Following high school, he was employed by the former General American Transportation Corporation's Masury plant for more than ten years until the plants closing. He then worked as a nurse's assistant for twenty three years at many different nursing homes in Pennsylvania and Ohio and retired in 2008. John loved fishing and camping with his children and grandchildren and also enjoyed woodworking.
Surviving are: his mother, Julia H. Coon, Patagonia section of Hermitage; his wife of 21 years, Sara Foltz; five children, John R. Coon and his girlfriend Jeanine Smith, Masury; James D. Coon, Sharon; Shain P. Widdersheim, Struthers, Ohio; Lilly Foltz; and Ryan Foltz, both Hubbard; a nephew, whom he helped raise, Timothy Perl, at home; three brothers, Richard Coon and his wife Paula, Hubbard; Billy Coon and his wife Betty, Sharon; and Raymond Wood and his wife Mary, Gary, New York; a sister, Mary Horton and her husband Tim, Florida; four grandchildren, Samantha, Teddy, Dallas and Denver; a great granddaughter, Baylee; John's caregivers, Paul and Mary Jo Perl; and several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his father, his step-father; and a brother, Jessie Coon, who was killed in action during the Vietnam War.
