John R. Burick, 85, of New Castle passed away on Monday, Nov. 23, 2015, at Jameson Hospital.
John was born on Nov. 4, 1930, in Chewton to the late Frank and Helen Powell Burick.
He graduated from Lincoln High School in Ellwood City.
On June 2, 1962, he married the former Gloriann McFarland in St. Joseph the Worker Church. John and Gloriann became the first couple to be married in the new church on Cascade Street.
After 28 years, he retired from the Babcock and Wilcox Co., where he had worked in the maintenance department.
He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church, where he served as an usher.
John enjoyed frequenting area coffee shops and talking about politics, economics and religion, topics that many others would shy away from. He was proud of winning the first Orange Crate Derby in New Castle back in 1946.
He was most proud of his children and grandchildren. Above all, he loved his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his loving grandchildren.
Besides his wife, Gloriann, he is survived by two daughters, Dr. Shelia Burick-Cardenas and her husband, Manuel, and Valerie Cantakis and her husband, Christopher Andrew; three sons; Kevin Burick and his wife, Michelle, Brian Burick and his wife, Janice, all of New Castle, and Jason Burick and his wife, Andrea Knight, of Cleveland; a sister, Gloria Houk, of Chewton; a brother, Dr. Wayne Burick, of Chewton; and 10 grandchildren; Cara and Alaina Cantakis, Viviana, John and Christina Cardenas, and Isabella, John, Joshua, Faith and Luciana Burick.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Jessie Rocco Burick.
Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, 111 W. Falls St.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph the Worker Church with the Rev. Frank D. Almade, pastor, serving as celebrant.
Interment will take place in St. Vitus Cemetery.
