John G. Barker of Hermitage passed away unexpectedly
Wednesday
(2-3-16) after a fall at his residence.
He was 89.
Mr. Barker was born October 5, 1926, in Sharon, a son of James and Grace Barrett Barker.
He was raised in the Patagonia section of Hermitage and attended Hickory High School.
A decorated war veteran, John served with the US Navy aboard the USS LST #6 during WW II and was the recipient of the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon with one star.
John retired in 1983 from the US Postal Service after 30 years of service and also worked at the former Tally's Jewelers in Hermitage.
He was a longtime active member of St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Sharon, where he was a ordained reader and participated in the
Friday
pierogi sales.
He was an accomplished woodworker and needlepoint artist and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening.
His wife of 61 years, the former Catherine Tylowski, whom he married Oct. 28, 1950, passed away June 12, 2012.
Surviving are: a son, Matthew J. Barker and his wife Debra, Hermitage; a daughter, Mary Grace Fiscus and her husband John "Chico" , Sharpsville; eight grandchildren, Cassidy Jo and Alyssa Barker; Cortney Cimoric and her husband Tom; Nicole Stone and her husband Brad; Maurice List and his wife Sally; Conor Brant; Heather Garner and her husband Jared; and Jon Fiscus; and five great grandchildren, Carleigh and Kelsie Suhoney; and Cailey "K", Jacob and Bennett List.
He also leaves a sister, Paula Orndorff and her husband Tom, Fredonia; a brother, Richard Neal Barker, Cleveland; sisters- and brother-in-law, Jean Barker, Hermitage; and Arlo and Paul Sirochman, Brookfield; and several loving nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife and parents, John was preceded in death by three sisters, Loretta DeSantis, Patricia Trinkes and Alice Canale; and a brother, James Barker.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 375 Clark St., Sharon, PA 16146.

) in St. John's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Sharon, with Rev. Andrew Gall, pastor, officiating.
Everyone is asked to go directly to the church.
Interment: Morefield Cemetery with military honors rendered by the Hickory VFW Honor Guard.
