John "Sam" Adamczyk, 96, of 780 Frank Ave. passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013, at the Greer House. Sam, as he was affectionately known to his family and friends, was born Dec. 26, 1916, in New Castle to the late Stanly and Mary Pez'da Adamczyk. He served in the Army from Jan. 17, 1945, to Oct, 25, 1946, attaining the rank of sergeant. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory ribbon and the Army of Occupation Medal. Sam retired from Universal Rundle Corp., where he had work in the china plant for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church. Sam was an avid hunter for many years and enjoyed camping and gardening, and was known for his homemade smoked sausage. He was married to the former Sophie Zbegan on Feb.18, 1938, and she preceded him in death on Feb. 16, 2006, after 67 years of marriage. Sam is survived by a sister, Josephine Dec of Akron, Ohio; and a granddaughter, Lauren L. DeFelice of New Castle. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two daughters, Frances DeFelice and Barbara Steinbrink; three brothers, Felix "Phil" Adamczyk, Walter "Flossee" Adamczyk and Frank "Chick" Adamczyk; 2 sisters, Mary Mateja and Helen Gorgacz; and a grandson, Jeffery DeFelice. Calling hours are 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, 2013, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St. A blessing service will follow at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Frank Almade officiating. Military rites will be performed at 10:45 a.m. by the New Castle Area Honor Guard. Burial will follow in Castle View Memorial Gardens. Sam's family wishes to thank the staff of the Greer House and Southern Care Hospice for their care and kindness extended to him.
