Joanne (Witherow) Troy, formerly of Sharon, passed away on Tuesday, June 26, 2018, in her Westerville, Ohio home with her daughters by her side after a long illness. Mrs. Troy was born October 19, 1933, to Lloyd and Elizabeth (O'Shea) Witherow in Rush Township, PA.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John J. Troy; her parents; and her brothers, Jack, Bob and Dick Witherow. She is survived by her daughters, Susan and Linda Troy of Westerville; a brother Tony Witherow and wife Phyllis, of Youngstown, OH; three sisters-in-law, Julie Troy, of Newtown, CT; Bonnie Walsh, of Temecula, CA; and Valerie Witherow, of Columbus, OH; two cousins, Becky Princehorn, of Worthington, OH; and Daniel Smith of Columbus, OH; and many other family and friends who will miss her greatly.
A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Joanne earned her registered nurse degree from the Youngstown School of Nursing and received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Youngstown State University. She practiced nursing in several areas including respiratory care, critical care, cancer treatment and even as a school nurse at her daughters elementary school in Midland, MI. She was privileged to care for the rich and famous in Burbank, CA at St. Joseph's Hospital and worked with the Sisters of Providence in Northern and Southern California. She retired following 22 years of dedicated service to her patients.
Joanne married John J. Troy in Youngstown, OH on November 22, 1956 and moved to numerous states as Jay furthered his career in Engineering. They moved to Westerville after the 1994 earthquake which nearly destroyed their home in California.
She loved to play bridge, always trying to get gold points towards her Life Master. She was extremely active in the auxiliary of the Ohio Society of Professional Engineers, the National Society of Professional Engineers and the California Society of Professional Engineers. Both Jay and Joanne were world travelers, making stops in Egypt, China, Alaska, Italy, France, Spain, Australia, Israel, Jordan, and the Caribbean.
A funeral service will be held at noon Saturday, July 7, 2018, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon, where friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service.
Interment: Next to her husband in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Farrell, Pa.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Paul's Church or to the Youngstown State University Department of Nursing.
She was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church, Westerville, as are her daughters.
