Obituary

Joan L. (Templeton) Polkovitch, 84, St. John XXIII Home, Hermitage. It is with sincere and loving regret that we share the passing of our mother who passed away from natural causes in West Penn Hospital, Pittsburgh, Saturday (11-7-15) at 9:38am after a valiant and fearless battle with an extended illness. She was surrounded by family at the time of her ascension. She was 84. She was born on April 6, 1931 in Sharon and was raised in Hermitage. Joan was a long-time resident of Sharon and lived on Federal Drive. Later in life she enjoyed the company of many great friends as a resident of Mertz Towers, Sharpsville, and more recently at Saint John XXIII, Hermitage. A beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, great-aunt, great-great-aunt, cousin, and friend, Joan was the ninth child born of and Robert Milton and Lenora Alderman Templeton. She had eleven siblings and a large extended family, all of which she loved endlessly and unconditionally. Joan enjoyed nearly 46 years of marriage with her husband, Michael J. Polkovitch. They were married on June 24, 1950. Joan and Michael had four daughters which they raised in Sharon. She was a model mother and an active member of the community. She served in leadership roles for the Girl Scouts of America and the Junior Women's Club for which she served as an event planner of the annual Pink Stocking Ball. She was a committee woman for the Democratic Party and was also a member of various card clubs. She worked at the former Eagle Grill, Farrell, PA. Following the death of her husband on May 15, 1996, she served as the fearless, classy, and ever-compassionate matriarch of a strong family which, by then, included six grandchildren. Joan enjoyed participating in social events and gatherings and spending time with her grandchildren, never missing a sporting event or musical performance. She frequently enjoyed demonstrating her quick wittedness as she relentlessly heckled her beloved son-in-laws. She loved her entire family with all of her heart and leaves behind a legacy of selflessness, humility, honesty, and integrity, values in which she had endlessly instilled in her children and grandchildren. She will be deeply missed and forever in the hearts of her family and friends. She is survived by four daughters, Diane George, Hermitage, Darlene Hengenius and her husband Bob, Spencerport, NY, Jean Donaldson and her husband Mark, Sharpsville, and Vicki Goda and her fiancé Ken Miller, Brookfield, OH; and three sisters, Pat Varkonda, Fort Worth, TX; Elinor Smith, Brookfield, OH, and Maryellen Bennett, Sharpsville. She also leaves her six grandchildren to cherish her memory, Nicole (George) Todora and her husband Bradley, Nathan George, Joseph Hengenius, Julie Hengenius, Cody Donaldson, and Megan Donaldson. She is preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Robert "Rye", Charles, Perry, and Paul Templeton, four sisters, Phyllis Evans, Ruth Hughes, Esther Boyle, and Gladys Skip Santelli; and her son-in-law, Barry George. Calling hours: 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday (11-11-15) and from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service Thursday (11-12-15) in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc.
