Obituary

Joan F. Patterson, 84, of New Castle passed away peacefully Sunday morning, April 29, 2018, in her residence.

Mrs. Patterson was born in New Castle on October 18, 1933, to the late Charles and Evelyn (Geibel) Hogue. She attended St. Mary's Parochial Grade School, graduated from New Castle High School in 1951, and then graduated from the New Castle Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1954.

Her husband, Thomas L. Patterson, whom she married December 3, 1955, preceded her in death on November 21, 1997.

After the birth of her first son, she and her husband, Tom, moved to Miami, FL, where she worked at Jackson Memorial Hospital for 10 years. Joan gave birth to three more sons. In 1968, upon transfer of her husband to the Washington D.C. area, the family moved to Waldorf, MD. They returned to New Castle in December of 1973.

Joan returned to nursing at St. Francis Hospital where she became nurse manager of the Rehabilitation Unit, as well as working in the office of Dr. R. Vandrak, until her retirement in 1999.

During her retirement, Joan volunteered in the Work Health unit at St. Francis Hospital until 2002. She then began working at the Children's Advocacy Center (CAC), where she remained until her second retirement in 2010. Joan continued in a volunteering capacity at CAC, until her recent illness.

Joan was a faithful member of St. Camillus Church, where she attended morning Mass, was a member of the adult choir, and the Ladies Guild.

She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and many foreign countries.

Joan leaves behind: two loving sons, Thomas G. Patterson, of New Castle, and Dale L. (Laura) Patterson, of Lemoore, CA; daughter-in-law, Pamela (Patterson) Wiroll, Hartland, WI; two sisters, Donna M. Johnson, of Clawson, MI,  and Carol L. Glover, of Hilton Head, SC; brother-in-law, William (Melissa) Patterson, of Johnstown, PA; six grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren, 15 nieces and nephews; and 32 grand nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Joan was preceded in death by two sons, Daniel and Wayne Patterson.

Joan will be remembered first and foremost for her devotion to her sons and their families, her many years of nursing service, her commitment to the CAC, and as a member of the St. Camillus Church Choir.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Camillus de Lellis Parish, c/o the Adult Choir, 314 W Englewood Ave, New Castle, PA 16105.

In keeping with Joan's wishes there will be no visitation.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian burial that will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 4, 2018 in St. Camillus de Lellis Church. The Rev. Michael Peck, pastor, will be the celebrant.

Interment: St. Mary's Cemetery, New Castle.
