Joan "Elaine" Berlin, of Mercer, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family Sunday evening, March 10, 2019, in St. Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown. She was 84.
Mrs. Berlin was born November 21, 1934, in Hamilton, OH, a daughter of James K. and Vesta S. (Townsend) Lee. She was a 1951 alumnus of Portsmouth (Ohio) High School, and later earned her bachelor's degree from Ohio University, Athens, OH.
Upon graduation, she married her beloved husband of nearly 64 years, Keith B. Berlin, Sr., on June 19, 1955, and he survives at home.
Primarily a homemaker, Elaine worked as a teacher early in her life and actively volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader and Cub Scout Den Mother for many years. With a passion for glassware, she later opened the Berlin Glass House, an antique store she owned and operated with her husband in New Wilmington, PA. Elaine also offered private art lessons and served as the president of the New Wilmington Merchants Association.
Elaine was of the Methodist faith.
She enjoyed traveling around the United States, and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, Elaine is survived by a daughter, Kate (Steve) Marshall, Garland, TX; three sons, William (Dr. Tomiko Tsuchida) Berlin, PhD., Rockville, MD, Robert (Mari Teter) Berlin, St. Louis, MO, and Keith (Kate Rood) Berlin, Jr., Portland, OR; a sister, Joyce Fisher, Greenville; a brother, John (Deborah) Lee, Naples, FL; six grandchildren, James (Katie) Berlin, William (Alyssa Loney) Berlin, Nicole (Clint) Berlin Eastburn, Zack Berlin, Megan Marshall and Warren Berlin; three great grandchildren, Parker Berlin, Jace Eastburn and Carter Berlin; and a dear niece, Jill Reynolds, Niles, OH.
Elaine was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial donations may be directed towards the Salvation Army, 600 Fisher Hill, Sharon, PA 16146.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday (3-14-19) in New Wilmington United Methodist Church, 125 S. Mercer St., New Wilmington, PA 16142, with Pastor Becky Rosengarth, officiating.
Interment will be in Fair Oaks Cemetery, New Wilmington
