Jennie F. "Jayne" McCleary, formerly of Elm Ave., Sharon and Stafford St., Farrell, passed away Sunday morning, July 15, 2018, in St. John XXIII Home, Hermitage, where she resided in assisted living for the past three years. She was 108.
Mrs. McCleary was born August 2, 1909, in Plain Grove Twp., Volant, PA, a daughter of Herbert B. and Minnie Florence (Palmer) Martin.
She attended schools in Plain Grove Township for 12 years and received a B.A. in education from the former Slippery Rock State Teachers College in 1930. Early in her life, Jayne taught school in a one room school house in Pine Twp.
Jayne was a 50-year member of First Presbyterian Church, Sharon, where she taught Sunday School for 17 years. She loved being outdoors walking and picnicking, particularly in Buhl Park, and also enjoyed planting flowers and gardening. Jayne always looked forward to dinners at the Hickory Grille, Hermitage, and ordering a cup of her favorite French onion soup.
Her husband of 58 years, Raymond R. McCleary, whom she married in 1933 passed away on November 14, 1991.
She is survived by a sister, Dorothy "Dot" Neely, New Wilmington; a special nephew, Charles Shoaff and his wife Esther, New Castle; and several other nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and her parents, Jayne was preceded in death by a daughter Jeanne McCleary; two brothers, Kenneth and Clarence Martin; and two sisters, Lola Baker and Mary Shoaff.
Memorial contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 600 E State St #1, Sharon, PA 16146; or Buhl Park Foundation, 715 Hazen Rd, Hermitage, PA 16148.
In keeping with Jayne's wishes there will be no calling hours. She has donated her body to science through Humanity Gifts Registry.
Memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday in First Presbyterian Church, Sharon, with Rev. Dr. Glenn Hink, officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 E. State St., Sharon.
