Jean Marie Daffin of Hermitage passed away at
3:06 a.m.
Thursday, March 10, 2016, in her residence, after an extended illness.
She was 90.
Mrs. Daffin was born Jan. 13, 1926, in Oil City, PA, a daughter of Harry J. and Nora G. (Eckles) Costello.
She moved to Sharon in 1941 and was a 1945 alumna of Sharon High School.
Jean was the president and CEO of Daffin's Candies, Inc., Sharon.
She was a former member of Church of the Sacred Heart, Sharon.
Active in the community, Jean was the recipient of the Shenango Valley Chamber of Commerce prestigious Phoenix award in 2006; and the Bill Knecht Tourism award
for her outstanding contribution to tourism in Mercer County.
She was presented the Melvin Jones Fellow award by the Lions Club International Foundation for her dedicated humanitarian services and was honored by the Sharon Lions Club for her distinguished and meritorious service given to the club while serving with outstanding devotion, vigor and ability.
She was a proud supporter of the March of Dimes, United Way of Mercer County, American Heart Association and the Rotary Club of Sharon, particularly the all-inclusive Playground Project for Buhl Park.
She was a member of the Retail Confectioners International.
Her husband, Paul "Pete" Daffin, whom she married Jan. 19, 1952, passed away Feb. 13, 1998.
Surviving are: a daughter, Diane M. Daffin, Hermitage; a brother, Joseph E. Costello, Sharpsville; nephews, Bernie Sigler and his wife Monica, Sharpsville; Gary Sigler, Hermitage; Joseph Sigler and his companion Sylvia Hatterer, Hermitage; Pete Lewnes and his wife Linda, Brookfield; James Lewnes and his wife Sharon, Columbus, OH; and Robert Harpster and his wife Nancy, Sharpsville; nieces, Sandy Hoover, Sharon; Georgia Picciotto and her husband Francis, Shenango Twp.; and Linda Harpster, Arizona; and several great nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, Jean was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mary Alice Sigler; a brother, Harry "Bud" Costello; and a sister-in-law, Dorothy Costello.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Daffin Family Foundation, c/o the Community Foundation of Western PA and Eastern Ohio, 7 West State St., Suite # 301, Sharon, PA 16146.
