Obituary

A private service is planned for James Lee Patrick Bortner, Hermitage, who passed away at 2:35 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, in UPMC Horizon, Farrell. He was 71. Mr. Bortner was born Jan. 23, 1944, in Sharon, a son of Andrew Carlyle and Delia Henighan Bortner. As a young boy, Jim attended Sacred Heart School, Sharon, and was an altar server for Monsignor Michael J. Murphy. He attended Brookfield High School and graduated in 1962. A lifelong area resident, he worked for the postal service as a letter carrier in Sharpsville for 39 years, retiring in 2006. Jim was a veteran of the Army and served during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1971, attaining the rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of Shenango Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1338. Jim loved dogs, especially boxers. He enjoyed taking his boxer, Barkley Peyton, for long walks. He was an avid reader and a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Jim is survived by his wife, Patricia Bortner, at home; one son, James J. Bortner, Hermitage; and one brother, Andrew Bortner and his wife Beverly, Grove City. He also is survived by two grandchildren, whom he loved and adored, Dustin and Nathan Bortner; and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Bradley Patrick Bortner; and a brother, Michael Bortner. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to American Cancer Society, 320 Bilmar Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 16205-4620. Calling hours: None, at the request of the deceased. Service: Private.
