Obituary

James Donald Murray, 82, of New Castle, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Wednesday, September 22, 2010, in his residence.

Mr. Murray was born June 1, 1928 in New Castle a son of the late Philip and Anna Kiernan Murray.

A lifelong city resident, he attended the former St. Mary's Parochial Grade School and was a 1947 graduate of New Castle High School.

Jimbo, as he was known by many, served as a Staff Sgt. with the US Army following high school. He retired from North American Van Lines where he was an independent truck driver for many years.

Mr. Murray was a devout catholic and was an active member of St. Joseph the Worker Church, New Castle. He sang in the church choir, was a Eucharistic Minister and, following his retirement, worked in many capacities at the church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council # 512; and a former member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, both New Castle.

Jimbo was extremely proud of his Irish heritage and one of the highlights of his life was when he traveled to Ireland. He was a fan of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jim had a soft spot for children and enjoyed playing Santa Claus at Christmas time for his many nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by many as a fun loving and generous man who loved telling stories. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends and Church.

Surviving are: a brother, Deacon Charles Murray, Pekin, Illinois; two sisters, Anna Mae Withrow; and Gertrude Blight and her husband Conrad, all New Castle; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Jim was preceded in death by four sisters, Elizabeth Ferry, Eleanor Murray, Catherine Arblaster and Helen Gay; and two brothers, Edward and Philip Murray.

Calling hours will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday, September 24, 2010, in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 111 W. Falls St., New Castle.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2010, in St. Joseph the Worker Church, New Castle, with the Rev. James A. Downs, pastor of Christ the King Parish, as celebrant.

Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, New Castle, with military honors rendered by the New Castle Area Honor Guard.
