James R. “Jim” Meier, 78, of Sharon, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, March 9, 2026, in Hillcrest Hospital, Cleveland, OH.
Mr. Meier was born on July 19, 1947, in Sharon, a son of the late Frederick and Margaret (Mitch) Meier. He was a 1965 graduate of Sharon High School and attended Youngstown State University.
Jim was a long-time employee of the former Sharon Transformer Division of Westinghouse Electric Corp., where he was a laboratory technician until the plant's closure. ABB acquired the lab of Westinghouse, where he remained, prior to working in the laboratory of the former VEC Technology in Transfer, PA.
A devout Catholic, Jim was a lifelong member of St. Joseph’s Church, Sharon, where he was an altar server as a child.
On May 31, 1969, he married the former Mary Ellen Bicek in St. Joseph’s Church. She passed away on June 12, 2006.
He was also a member of the American Legion, Post 299, Sharon, where he looked forward to gathering with lifelong friends.
In his younger years, he loved to play softball and was an outstanding left fielder, competing in the Westinghouse League and for St. Joseph in the former Shenango Valley Church Softball League. Jim was also an avid golfer and participated in many leagues throughout the years.
Above all, Jim loved spending time with his family. He and his wife took great pleasure in attending their three daughters’ scholastic and athletic events. Later, he looked forward to attending his grandchildren in all the activities they participated in.
He is survived by his three daughters, Elizabeth Binns and her husband, Steven, of Hudson, OH, Kathryn Meier and her husband, Jeremy Mitchem, and Maureen Meier, all of Fort Mill, SC; six grandchildren, Peyton and Ella Binns, Grady and Brody Mitchem, and twins, Emery and Marley Mitchem. Also surviving is a sister, Margaret Wong and her husband, Paul; and a brother, Jeffrey Meier and his wife, Denise.
In addition to his parents and wife, Jim was preceded in death by two brothers, Frederick (Kay) and Thomas Meier.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to Buhl Park, 715 Hazen Rd., Hermitage, PA 16148.
Calling hours will be 3 to 6 p.m. Friday (03/13/2026) in J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 1090 East State St., Sharon.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday (03/14/2026) in St. Joseph’s Church, 79 Case Ave., Sharon, with Rev. Richard Tomasone, as celebrant.
Interment: St. Rose Cemetery, Hermitage.
