Obituary

James Joseph "Champ" Marks of Farrell passed away at 7:48 a.m. Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, in his residence.  He was 82.

Mr. Marks was born September 10, 1934, in Farrell, a son of Frank and Mary (Esposito) Marks.  A lifelong Farrell resident, he was a 1952 graduate of Farrell High School and earned a BS degree in Education with a specialty in Art from Youngstown State University.  Champ served with the U.S. Army and was stationed in Hawaii.  He was honorably discharged in 1958, following the death of his mother, and returned home to help with the family business, the well known Marks Grocers in Farrell.  Champ retired from the Farrell Post Office where he was employed for more than 30 years.  He and his beloved dog, Tippy, were a familiar duo to the many residents on his route.

Champ was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell, and its Holy Name Society.  He was also a member of the Italian Home, Farrell, and the YSU Alumni Association.

Champ loved to paint, watch Law & Order, write poetry, complete crossword puzzles and converse with the many customers that frequented the family store.  He also enjoyed voicing his opinion as a writer to The Herald's "letter to the editor" and was an avid diehard fan of Farrell sports and Notre Dame University.  He loved spending time with family and friends and would do anything he could for them.

Surviving are: a sister, Jennie "Dolly" Marks, Farrell; a brother, Jerry Marks and his wife Delores, Masury; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Champ was preceded in death by six brothers, Joseph, Ralph, Richard, Frank, Jr., John and Adam Marks; and two sisters, Mildred A. DeMark and Theresa M. Galardo.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Our Lady of Fatima Church, 601 Roemer Blvd., Farrell, PA 16121.

Per Champ's wishes, there are no calling hours.

Funeral Mass will be
11 a.m. Friday, April 21, 2017 , in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Farrell, with the Rev. Matthew Ruyechan, pastor, as celebrant.
