Obituary

James Kaplin, a one-year resident of New Wilmington, formerly of New Castle, passed away at 10:10 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, in Jameson Hospital. He was 82. Mr. Kaplin was born Jan. 30, 1933, in Yatesboro (Armstrong County). He was the only child of the late Andrew and Mary Mikitta Kaplin. He was a 1951 graduate of New Castle High School and studied accounting at Youngs-town State University. He served four years with the Air Force during the Korean War and was the recipient of the United Nations, Korean and National Defense Service medals. James was an accountant in the manufacturing industry and served as general manager of Metal Carbides in Boardman, Ohio, for nearly 20 years. He retired in 1996 as president of Winner Tech in Sharon. James was a member of Mary, Mother of Hope, St. Mary Church and its Holy Name Society. He was a member of the Eintracht Singing Society and sang as a baritone with the Eintracht Maennerchor for 50 years. He was also an accordion player and wrote his own polkas. He was a member of the VFW, Post 6233, West Middlesex and the Polish Falcons, New Castle. Years earlier, he enjoyed horseshoes, hunting and fishing. He was also a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and Steelers. James was a devoted husband and father and loved doting on his grandchildren, whom he adored. His wife, the former Mary Agnes Orres, whom he married June 25, 1960, passed away April 6, 2005. He later married the former Phyllis Spicer on June 4, 2011, and she passed away June 2, 2013. Surviving are two daughters, Rita Lynn Kaplin of Pittsburgh and Kara Anne Reider and her husband, Jon, of New Castle; three sons, James A. Kaplin and Stephen M. Kaplin, both New Castle, and David B. Kaplin of Fairmont, W.Va.; and two grandchildren, Anna and Jake Reider. He also leaves two stepdaughters and a stepson and their families, Kathy Aven and her husband, Kenneth, of New Castle, Maureen Passifume and her husband, Jeff, of Columbus, Ohio, and Doug Lach and his wife, Kristen, of Columbus, Ohio. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Mary, Mother of Hope, St. Mary Church, 124 N. Beaver St., New Castle, Pa. 16101. Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 4, in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc., 111 W. Falls St. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary Church, with the Rev. Frank D. Almade, pastor, as celebrant. Entombment will follow in Resurrection Mausoleum in St. Mary Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the New Castle Area Honor Guard.
