Obituary

James L. Goodge, Jr., 88, of New Castle passed away peacefully Sunday afternoon, March 24, 2019, in Assumption Village, North Lima, OH.

Mr. Goodge was born September 30, 1930, in New Bedford, PA, a son of Lloyd and Laverne (Line) Goodge. A lifelong area resident, he was a 1948 graduate of Union High School.

For over 40 years, Jim was the co-owner of the former Foremen Tool and Die, Boardman, OH. He was previously employed by Lake Park Tool and Die, Hubbard, OH, for 18 years.

Jim was a devout Catholic and longtime member of St. James the Apostle Parish, Pulaski, PA, where he belonged to its Men's Group for many years.

He enjoyed farming, especially while breeding his horses. Jim raised and trained Standardbred horses for harness racing at Northfield Park, the Canfield Fair and the Meadows Racetrack and Casino. In his younger years, he loved to hunt raccoons and raise mink in New Bedford. His passion for hunting and fishing coincided with his love for nature and the ability to provide his family with many dinners of trout, rabbit, turkey, pheasant and deer.

Later in his life, Jim enjoyed spending time at the slot machines with his wife, Betty, especially the 25 cent machine.

His beloved wife of 59 years, the former Elizabeth Anne "Betty" Vigne, whom he married May 12, 1951 in St. Mary's Church, New Castle, preceded him in death October 18, 2010.

He is survived by, four daughters, Anne Goodge, of Jacksonville, FL, Janet (Bernard) Crespi, of Edinburg, Julia Goodge, of Pulaski, and Laurie Yantes, of St. John's, FL; four sons, James (Genevieve) Goodge, III, of McDonald, PA, Joseph (Zenia) Goodge, of Pulaski, Thomas (Judy) Goodge, of Greensburg, PA, and Richard Goodge, of Pittsburgh, PA; two brothers, Ray and Keith Goodge; a sister, Erma Gorley; 22 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife and parents, Jim was preceded in death by a daughter, Marcia Robison; and two sisters, Maxine Wallace and Patricia Hold.

Memorial contributions may be directed to St. James Men's Group, c/o St. James the Apostle Parish, 4019 US-422, Pulaski, PA 16143.
