James B. Burris of New Castle, passed away peacefully at 6:15 p.m. Saturday (3-12-11) in Jameson Hospital with family at his side. He was 78.
He was born on February 26, 1933 in Waynesburg, Pa., the son of Charles J. and Alberta Geibel Burris.
He married the former Josephine Monica Sullivan of the Bronx, New York. She survives.
Mr. Burris was an Industrial Engineer for LTV, Youngstown, and an Industrial Engineer and Computer Programmer at Thomas Steel Strip, Warren.
He was educated in Waynesburg and West Greene school systems, graduating from West Greene High School in 1951. He graduated in 1959 from Waynesburg College where he earned his B.S. degree in Geology.
Mr. Burris served in the United States Army with a Top Secret clearance from 1954 to 1957. While there he attended the Army Language School in Monterey, CA for 12 months and became proficient in the Russian language. He served as a military Intelligence Operative in Chitose, Wakkanai, and Hokkaido, Japan, attaining the rank of Sp2 (E-5).
Mr. Burris was a member of Mary Mother of Hope Parish, New Castle. He was a charter member of the National Army Security Agency Association. Jim was a life member of the Castlewood Rod and Gun Club and the NRA. An outdoorsman, he enjoyed deer hunting, and a good day of fishing. He also built a lot of his own furniture and he enjoyed working on his computer. He was a member of the Cornerstone Genealogical Society in Waynesburg and had a lot of ancestry in the Mount Morris Area.
In addition to his wife Josephine, he is survived by his daughter Mary Burris of New Castle, Anne Mariani of Portersville, Pa. and son James B. Burris and his wife Gina (Frank) Burris of Mason, OH. He also leaves his four grandchildren, Brian and Jacob Burris, Kayleigh and Noah Mariani.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Charles J. Burris Jr.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday (3-15-11) in the J. Bradley McGonigle Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. 111 W. Falls Street, New Castle where final military honors will be rendered by the New Castle Area Honor Guard at 7:45 p.m.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday (3-16-11) at 9:00 a.m. in Mary Mother of Hope Parish ? St. Mary's Church with Rev. Victor J. Molka, pastor as the celebrant.
