James “Jim” Francis Bird, 62, of Hubbard, OH, passed away unexpectedly on March 1, 2026, at UPMC Mercy Hospital. Jim was born on October 30, 1963, a son of the late Charles H. Bird and Judith A. (Minnaugh) Bird.
Jim was a proud graduate of Cathedral Preparatory School and Gannon University, both in Erie, PA. He later embarked on studies at the North American College in Rome, Italy, as well as several other colleges to further his educational studies, ultimately earning an advanced degree in Educational Leadership.
Jim dedicated his life to service, both spiritually and professionally, through volunteerism and dedication to his family and friends. Jim’s Catholic faith was the cornerstone of all he did. He generously shared this gift with others, offering daily inspirations, Novenas, or other perfectly selected prayers for given circumstances. His career was mission-oriented, dedicated to the improvement of lives through organizations such as the Roman Catholic Church, George Junior Republic, Clarion University, and the Boys & Girls Club of Youngstown. Jim, always a leader, volunteered on many non-profit boards, in addition to directing bible studies or student groups along with his wife, DeAnna, at his parish.
Jim’s dedication to family and friends was unmatched. He showed up for everyone and knew exactly how to add levity to a situation. His smile and laugh were contagious, always armed with a joke. There is no doubt Jim was his mother’s favorite…he worked hard to earn that accolade! To everyone else, Jim excelled in his role of husband, brother, fun uncle, devoted godfather, and Pop Pop.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, DeAnna (Stefanak) Bird; stepsons, Jerald “Jay” A. Barris (Jennifer) and Tyler J. Barris (Mary); and step-grandchildren, Hunter, Isabella, and Lillian Barris, all of West Middlesex. His siblings include: Matthew (Lesa) Bird, of Gettysburg, PA, Charles (Mary Jo) Bird, of Louisville, KY, Mary M. Bird, of Akron, OH, and Frederick (Nancy) Bird, of Erie, PA. He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Debora L. Woge (Richard), Denise L. Burger (Warden), Darlene Hoffman (Kevin), and Dana L. Adams (Ronald), all of West Middlesex; and two brothers-in-law, Donald P. Stefanak (Cyndi) and Dennis Stefanak (Karen), all of Pulaski. Jim also enjoyed many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his in-laws, Norbert and Louise Stefanak, and an infant step-grandson Brayden Barris.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be directed to The Church of the Good Shepherd, 3613 Sharon Road, West Middlesex, PA 16159.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be no public calling hours.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon on Friday (3-6-2026) in the Church of the Good Shepherd, West Middlesex, with Rev. Glenn Whitman, as celebrant.
